What to see: Nérac en Albret

Armagnac region

Version Française

This great town is located on the northern edge of the Armagnac country, just below A62 Autoroute between Bordeaux and Toulouse. It straddles the river Baïse, a vital commercial route of the Armagnac trade.

The town is full of history which is reflected in the architecture and the surroundings:

  • Marguerite d'Angoulême, sister of Francois Ier, French King and patron of Cognac stayed here and wrote Heptameron
  • Henri de Navarre, future King Henri IV, spent most of his youth here with his parents; Jeanne d'Albret and Antoine de Bourbon. Nérac was the King's center for all his expeditions.
  • Catherine de Medicis spent time here in 1579 and Louis XIV visited here
  • in later years, Jacques de Romas experimented with electric kite, Haussman was the town's sous-prefect before moving to Paris and Arman Fallieres was the town's Mayor before becoming President of the French Republic.
  • Château de Henri IV dates back to early XVI century and houses today an archeological museum.

  • King's Gardens have some amazing things; Marianne's Palace and the Royal Pavilion of the Baths

  • Parc de la Garenne On the banks of the river Baïse is a beautiful park with fountains, open-air theatre and a great view of the King's chateau. It is rumored that Queen Margot, King's wife, spent lots of time walking here in search of love.

During the summer enjoy various cruises on the river Baïse and the Canal des Deaux-Mers; take an hour cruise on Prince Henry or rent a boat.
